CAUCHEMAR INTERVIEW

Hi Annick how are you?
Hey my friend, I’m doing rather great these days. I’ve been living at some friends’ place for a week, and then going to one of the best underground festivals in Europe in a couple of days (Hell’s Pleasure!)

Are you still around the globe?
Yes! I’m in Germany at the moment, and then going to France for a day... but unfortunately I will be returning home in a week. It will be weird to come back to Canada after a year and a half of traveling... arghhh!!!!!

Ok let the sabbath begin, tell me how you come up with the idea for Cauchemar, describe a little bit this amazing band.
CAUCHEMAR is a project that was started by myself and the guitarist, François. At first, we wanted to play pure Doom metal, but as we were writing the songs, our influences kind of mixed in and it had more of a doomy Heavy Metal feel. We wanted the songs to be infused with darkness and magic... and so CAUCHEMAR was created! Later on, our friend Patrick Pageau (ex-BASTARDATOR) joined to fill in on drums. He really added a lot to our sound!

Your musical style remind me a mixture of 80s dark (especially the vocals) with the dark aura of the first Death SS – Paul Chain, even the imaginary remember me Paul Chain... Do you know this bands?
Yes, we are big fans of Paul Chain Violet Theater, as well as a handful of other killer Italian Doom metal bands like BLACK HOLE, ANTONIUS REX, ZESS, RUN AFTER TO, THE BLACK, and more recently – ABYSMAL GRIEF and BLACK OATH!

Ok now you are gonna hate me, but I must say that till now I really dislike bands that sings in French, except Cauchemar, because I think that fits perfectly with the music, why you choose to sing in French?
Actually, I don’t hate you at all! It’s really great that you are able to enjoy our music even though the lyrics are in a language which you cannot stand listening to. Perhaps it’s because we come from Canada, and our French has a different kind of French? It’s way rougher and darker sounding than what is spoken in France right now. Anyway, we chose to sing in French because it is our native language, and we wanted to do something different from what is made these days. I personally think it sounds mysterious  and like you said, it fits well with the music. I wouldn’t see CAUCHEMAR with English lyrics.

Ok let`s talk about your Ep LA VIERGE NOIRE, I must say that it`s one of my top 10 albums of 2012, 5 really great songs, but the Ep is to short, I mean, when the fuck you are gonna release the full length?
As you know, we have been traveling for a year and a half, but during that time – we wrote seven new songs. Every time we were in a big city, we went into rehearsal rooms and wrote riffs and eventually, full songs! In fact, we just came back from our European tour – and did four of them live! But to answer your question, a full-length should come out in 2013, on NWN! Prods.

Who is the artist behind the cover artwork?
It is myself, haha! I’m a graphic designer, that’s what I do for living.

I saw that you were tour Europe in April and May, do you have some interesting story to tell?
Yeah, we toured western Europe for a month and a half. It was really great, we met so many people and had a lot of fun! We did meet some crazy people though, like the owner of the bar where we played in Belgium. She’s a deranged drug addict, and strangled our drummer because he was in the way of her getting behind the bar. She did apologize later though, and bought us beers hahaha!

Thank you Annick for your time, some last word for the Blasphemic Zine readers?
You’re welcome. We’d love to come to Slovenia one day, and visit your beautiful country... but until then, please listen to good Doom metal and support your local underground scene! Etienne, thank you for the interview. We really appreciate it. Good luck with the zine!
